We're in the news!

Dear Folks – remember when we hosted the Community Leadership Dinner in March?  It was a great success, and we had lots of positive comments from around town.  Well…I sent a note to our denomination (GARBC) about the event to let them know what we did, and just got a note back from the Baptist Bulletin (a national magazine) that they want to include an article about it in their next issue!  Cool!  So I just received an email from the editor wanting some more info and pictures so they can write up something for next month.

I’m glad our ministry is getting noticed by others as being community-oriented and outreach-focused (that is the middle phrase in our Logo – Building Up, Reaching Out, Sharing Christ).  Anyway – I was excited to get the message and wanted to share it with you.

See you tomorrow!

Church Camping Trip - July 6 - 9th

Dear Folks – I wanted to give some updated info concerning the camping trip.

We will be leaving next Sunday (July 6th) at 2:00pm from the church.  We will eat lunch together and pack the trailer.  We’re heading to Monument Campground in Oscoda, Mi (a beautiful, rustic campground on the AuSable River.  There are two group Campsites there (and several other single campsites).  This is a fairly primitive campground (no electricity on site), but it has water and modern bathrooms nearby.  It is near the beautiful AuSable River and awesome sand dunes (as well as Lake Huron).  We may be able to do some canoeing together (may cost extra).

I have to leave on Wednesday afternoon (July 9th), but you are free to stay longer if you’d like (food and campground fee will be on your own).

IMPORTANT:  Please make sure I get your money ($50 per person/$150 per family) by this Sunday (June 29th) if you plan on going (if you want, you can give me half this Sunday and half next Sunday).

Things you’ll need:  Tent, Sleeping bag/Pillow, bathroom stuff (there are no showers available – but a beautiful lake!), Bible, warm clothes, extra money, other camping-type things.  We’ll have a great time together!  Please don’t bring anything that will harm you or others.  We’ll will have devotions every night at supper.  And remember – everyone gets up for breakfast!

What you’ll get:  Transportation in the Church Van (The van holds 14 people.  If you drive up separately, you’ll need to pay for your gas – if you ride up with someone, please help them pay for gas J); Ten meals at the campsite (Sun Lunch – Wed Lunch); Campground Fee (Sunday – Wed).  You might want to bring some money for the road (fast food, pop, snacks, etc).

I’m looking forward to being with you.  We always have fun together.  Let me know if you have any questions.

Steve's picture

Folks – the picture of Steve isn’t loading right – here it is again.

Wright kids update

Folks – here’s a recent picture (attached) we got from Steve in Nsoko, Africa.  He has been working with orphans there – feeding them, helping to teach them, playing with them, loving them.  Many of the children have lost both parents from AIDS – he said it’s very sad to see them.  This picture shows one of the bright spots for this kid!  I hope you enjoy it.  I did!

Anna is coming back from Africa on Thursday/Friday of this week and then will do some debriefing.  She will be back in Michigan on Tuesday.  She said she is having a great time there.

Phillip is in Alaska now (we think – we haven’t heard from him yet – he left yesterday).  He’ll be there for 4 weeks doing an internship for a missionary pilot about 4 hours NE of Anchorage (in the mountains).

Thanks for praying for (and supporting) our family!

Carried Away

Just a note that Carried Away will have a product table with their CD’s for purchase and we will be taking a love offering for their ministry.  They are not charging us for coming, but are travelling from Toronto to be with us today.  Please be kind as the offering plate comes by!

Thanks,

Pastor Bob

Fun Family Fest Details

Folks – Just wanted to remind you of the times for the events today for the Fun Family Fest!  We are excited about all the things going on…

3:00pm – 4:30pm – Group games (Pie Eating Contest, Water balloon toss, Rope pull, Piñata, etc.)

5:30pm – 6:30pm – Britton’s Got Talent (there are some wonderful (and fun) acts that are being prepared!)

7:00pm – 8:15pm – Concert with Carried Away.  A very talented group from Toronto, Canada.  Their song “Closer to You” won the 2005 GMA award for best new song.  They had a new album out in 2007.  They have sung with groups such as Casting Crowns and Avalon, and have been the featured artists at Women of Faith Conferences around America.  We are privileged that they are coming to be with us!  The concert will be outdoors on a stage (on the grass, weather permitting).  Bring a blanket or lounge chairs to sit on.

8:15pm – Clean up – we need some of you to stay and help us put things back.

Some special things:

We are going to have the Fire Truck from Britton Come and be available for tours (and to help motivate the rope-pull participants)

We will have a popcorn machine to have a “carnival” atmosphere.

The dunk tank will cost $1 for three throws at the person in the tank (sign up if you’re interested in being inside).

The girls from Carried Away will be the judges for the “Britton’s Got Talent” Show.  They are excited to be with us – they got their start in a similar show – so that should be fun.  Check them out at http://www.myspace.com/carriedawaymusic

Hope to see you there today!  Invite your friends to this awesome community outreach event!

prayer request

Dear Folks – just got a phone call about Taylor McMullen (Doug & Stacie’s daughter).  She is on her way to the hospital by ambulance (to U of M) because she hurt herself (head/neck) while jumping on the trampoline.  They took her to the urgent care center and while she was there, she passed out.  Please pray as the doctors try to figure out what is going on and for her safety.

Thanks, Pastor Bob

Prayer requests

Dear folks – just got a couple of calls this afternoon for prayer that I wanted to pass along.

Kim Albring asked for prayer for her niece Haley (a newborn) who was born with a heart murmur.  They thought it would probably be okay in a couple of days, but then noticed that she was having trouble with her breathing, so they placed her in intensive care.  Please pray for her.

Marcia Rice asked for prayer for Adrianne Heath (Dave & Robin’s daughter) who has been struggling with severe headaches recently.  Today her whole side went numb and she’s not sure why.  They have taken her to the hospital to find out what is going on.  They don’t know much, but would like us to pray for her.

Thanks for praying and for passing these requests along to others.

If you're pro-life and live in Michigan

Folks – please consider this urgent request.  I don’t often forward things – but this will make a life and death difference for years to come.

Partial Birth Abortion Ban Finally Headed to Gov. Granholm

After passage in the Michigan House and Senate, the Michigan partial birth abortion ban is now heading to Governor Jennifer Granholm's desk. Once it formally reaches her desk, Governor Granholm will have 14 days to either sign it, veto it, or allow it to take effect without her signature.

Prior to the bill being enrolled, RLM President Barbara Listing sent a formal letter to the Governor inviting her to discuss the bill. But the Governor declined to meet with RLM. To date, all the statements coming from the Governor's office have been that she will veto the bill.

Our attention must be focused on lobbying Governor Granholm to either sign the bill or allow it to take effect without her signature. Governor Granholm is the only thing standing in the way of a Michigan ban on partial birth abortion.

ACTION ITEM: Contact the Governor and tell her to, "Uphold the wishes of the vast majority of Michigan citizens - Give Michigan the ban on partial birth abortion it has long sought to enact."

Church Update

Dear Folks – Good morning!  Hope your day is going well.  I wanted to give you an update on some prayer requests and other stuff.

Rex Kelly hurt his back last Friday at work and is out of commission for a few weeks.  Please pray for him as he recovers.  He is in good spirits and is taking it pretty well for how he feels!  Send a card to 205 S VanBuren St.  Tecumseh, Mi.  49286

Debbie’s uncle Marv is recovering from his triple-bypass and recent stroke.  He’s quite something!  They are trying to get him to the point where he can breathe well on his own (the stroke left him unable to cough/swallow) because there is some concern about pneumonia.  They will know more on Friday.

Katie Flint (Jim Stewart’s daughter) and baby Elizabeth are both doing well.  She (the baby) continues to improve and mom & dad have been staying at the Ronald McDonald house over the last few days.

Julia Collins is having some tests to determine the cause of her abdominal pain – pray for her as she prepares for that.

Libby Cochrane continues to request prayer for herself for depression and medical issues.

As far as other stuff happening…

We are getting ready for Father’s Day (Sunday), VBS (next week) and the Family Fun Fest (Sat, June 21).  I’m looking forward to Father’s Day.  We have a special guest who will be sharing his testimony.  And some lucky dad will receive a thick, juicy steak to cook on the grill!

I also hope you’re able to help out with VBS (bringing supplies, etc.) and participation in the Family Fun Fest.  Remember to invite (or bring) a kid to VBS so they can be taught about our wonderful Jesus.  Remember to invite (or bring) a friend to the Family Fun Fest so they can be encouraged and introduced to our wonderful church family!

Diane Steman (Tim Brososky’s sister) is having an open house this Saturday for her son (graduating from Manchester High School).  If you want to go to the open house or send a card, their address is 18120 Sharon Valley Rd  Manchester, Mi.  48258

Also, the party at Don Russ’ house is this Saturday if you can go.  The family will be providing food, music and an inflatable for the kids.

We sent out an update letter from Steven Wright yesterday.  Hope you enjoy the pictures and information.  He’s working in Swaziland with AIDS kids right now and staying on a Safari plantation (lions, giraffes, ostriches all over).  They are staying outside in tents and cooking their meals over a fire.  During the day, they travel to a Care Point where kids come to be fed, taught and loved on.  It is the only meal (or human contact) some of them get for the entire day.  He is behind on his financial support.  He needs about $2,000 by July 1st in order to continue on the Race.  If you can help him, I’m sure he would appreciate it!  You can keep in touch with him or donate at www.stevewright.theworldrace.org

Debbie and I will be leaving today (Thursday) to take Mark down to register for his college classes at Olivet University in Illinois.  He has freshman orientation Thurs – Sat so we will be staying there and going to “parent” classes.  This is the first time Debbie has seen the college, so we are both looking forward to it.  Mark is excited to begin this next phase of his life.  He’s going into mass communications (Film Studies) and is working this summer at the radio station (WLEN – 103.9 FM) as an announcer.  If you want to listen to him live on radio (which is quite a kick), he will be working the 7pm – 2am shift this Saturday.

I want to thank Sam McCarty and the Jr High Group for making signs for the Family Fun Fest.  You should be seeing signs pop up in yards around Britton.  Also, Sam will be teaching the High School Sunday School Group for the Summer.  Bill Bartenslager will be taking a break.  Bill has been teaching that class for many years!  Valerie is taking the 4th – 5th grade class for the summer.  So pray for our teachers as they take on new assignments!

Also, we have two new adult SS classes that you might want to join.  The ladies class is studying the book “Seeking Him”  (meets in my office).  The other adult class is learning how to memorize and meditate on Scripture through the Navigator book “Life Issues”.  Both studies are interesting and life-related.  Please make the effort to come early for Sunday School!

Well, I’ve talked a lot!  Hope you feel informed (maybe too much!).  If you know someone who might like this info – please forward it on.  There are many who enjoy being brought up to date on things going on here!

See you on Sunday!

Pastor Bob

A new baby, a funeral and a mission's update!

Dear folks – we have a new baby in our church!  John and Katie Flint (Jim Stewart’s daughter) had a baby girl on Monday afternoon (7 weeks premature).  She weighs 5lbs 1 oz.  Her lungs are not fully developed yet, so they have her in special care.  Katie is recovering from the C-Section (after 30 hours of labor) and will be staying at the Ronald McDonald house near the Toledo Hospital.  Please pray for them as they look forward to bringing her home!

Also – the funeral for Justin Dickerson (Dorothy Skampo’s grandson) went very well today.  Over 250 people were in attendance and heard a clear and compelling presentation of the gospel.  I was glad to be able to minister to the family as well as many of his friends.  Please pray for Dick and Dorothy as well as Dave & Dena (Justin’s mom and dad) as they adjust to this tragic reality.  They were not sure he was saved – but did say that Dorothy used to bring him to our church faithfully while he was a young boy (note to Sunday School teachers – your labor is not in vain in the Lord), so maybe he accepted the Lord while he was with us!  I’m praying that he did.  His present life did not reflect that he understood salvation.

Anna left with her team this morning for Africa and is flying over the ocean as I write this (Wed nite)!  Pretty cool.  She’ll be staying in Casablanca, Morocco for a 15-hour layover and do a little sight-seeing before getting on a plane to Guinea, West Africa.  She found out that there are huge spiders and cobras there!  They each sleep in a net at night so they don’t get bothered.  Sounds like she will be getting real friendly with the wildlife there!  Thanks for praying for her.  There is no phone service or internet connection where she is, so we will not be able to keep in touch.  I guess she’ll be doing missions the ‘old-fashioned’ way!

See you on Sunday!

Funeral arrangements & updates

Folks – I wanted to give you an update on Dick & Dorothy Skampo’s grandson, Justin.  He was killed in a tragic motorcycle accident (Doug McMullen is the officer in charge of the accident).  I have been asked to conduct the funeral for him.

Visitation will be today from 2 – 8pm at Anderson Funeral Home in Tecumseh.  The Funeral will be held on Wednesday at 1:30pm.  He will be buried at Brookside Cemetery.

Please send your condolences to Dick and Dorothy at 9103 N Union St. Tecumseh Michigan, 49286

Thanks, Pastor Bob

P.S.  Thanks for those who came to Mark’s graduation open house on Sunday!  He had a great time.

P.S.S. Phillip arrived back safely in Texas where he continues his studies and is getting ready for his internship in  Alaska later this month.

P.S.S. Anna arrived safely in Florida for two days of training before she leaves for Africa.  She said it is beautiful where she is right now and is getting to know her team.  She is excited to get going!
